Catch & Hold Attention through Images, Narrative, and Design

Herding the Moon

My dog Islay understands good design. She demonstrated this one night by trying to herd the moon.

When a full moon appeared on my computer's screen saver, Islay (a trained herding dog) reacted as if it were an unruly ram. She barked, shuffled from side to side, and tried to stare down the moon.

To Islay, the moon was out of context, on a screen instead of in the sky. She did her job, and being a well-trained human, I did mine. I shut down the computer. With the moon safely off screen and back in the sky, Islay settled and slept.

Shaping Your Story

Her blue eye can look a little crazy, but Islay's attention is razor sharp, and it creates motion: with sheep, with cattle, and often enough, with me.

My job is similar: I use design to stir audiences into action. Design tells stories, whether its through an elaborate web site or on a simple business card. If a story is appropriate to its context, it will connect with people and they will act. If not, they will move on.

With a PhD from Duke University's innovative English Department and experience helping manage a telecom business, I have spent a lifetime thinking about representations, consumers, and culture.

Whether it's with words, imagery, or web code, let me help you shape your story and connect with your audience.
